The Notting Hill Carnival happens at the bank holiday weekend every August. The Carnival is really a religious festival, but our carnival is a celebration of our ancestors’ freedom from slavery. We commemorate that in the carnival activity. Approximately two million people attend the carnival from all walks of life, all races, all creeds. We have the English, the Irish, the Greeks, the Spanish, the Caribbean people, the Africans, and all of them contribute towards making the carnival what it is today, a great multi-cultural festival that takes place in the streets of Notting Hill. What makes the Notting Hill Carnival special is that it is, by and large, spontaneous and it includes everybody. No spectator stands and spectators. Every spectator is expected to contribute and in contributing you express yourself, you find yourself. You can be as creative as possible and that makes it different.

Turkey, a NATO member and important strategic ally of the US, was not among the 10 new members to join the European Union; but after intense diplomatic pressure from the US, it hopes to receive a date to begin negotiations on membership at the Danish summit. The most obvious strengths to Turkey’s case are its size, strategic position and powerful military. If Turkey joined the EU, it would become its second largest country: it has a population of 68 million people. This would also be beneficial to the US and Britain because Turkey has bases not far from in border with Iraq; the US president, George Bush, has been lobbying the Danish prime minister on Turkish membership for just this reason. Moreover, Turkey’s military strength would give weight to any proposed European army. The greatest political obstacle is Cyprus, however. Turkey is in fact occupying the territory of an EU member state.

It is widely being said that the “century of life sciences” has now begun – and with it, a new era in medicine, pharmaceuticals, the food industry, agriculture, and environmental protection. According to prognoses compiled be the Boston Consulting Group, the biotechnology industry will achieve an almost threefold increase in net output from a figure of approximately 140 billion dollars today to a total of 433 billion dollars in 2010. The experts are confident that genome research, in particular, will achieve significant scientific advances in the life science sector.

In Wuthering Heights, Emily Bronte employs the rhetoric’s of isolation and transcendence in an even more paradoxical way, creating for Heathcliff a strange blend of logical discourse and striking imagery that is both physical and multifarious. This novel deals with the primal spiritual-physical split, which may in fact underline all autodiction. Heathcliff repeatedly raises the issue of intellectual boundaries separating human beings in conjunction with physical imagery, thereby expressing the theme of spiritual-physical division as a fundamental human concern and the crux of the novel in particular. [autodiction = soliloquy]

I- Translate the following extract into Good Arabic:
The word ‘injury’ must not be taken in a literal sense as meaning physical injury. Every person who suffers damage to his person, his property, or his reputation as a result of an infringement of the law suffers a legal injury. Compensation may frequently be recovered for damage to property and to reputation, as well as for pain and suffering due to legal injury. Many of these claims cannot be measured in actual money terms. It is for the judge or jury to assess the amount which may reasonably be estimated to compensate the injured person for the loss which he has suffered as a result for the tort. There are many cases when any breach of a legal duty. If, for example, you are engaged in trade, and another tradesman opens a similar business on adjoining premises, you will suffer financial loss when he takes your customers from you. He does not, however, commit any legal wrong by his conduct, and the law, accordingly, will give you no remedy for your grievance.

Competition for the Best Ideas
For science and research at the beginning of the 21st century, globalization is not something that is going to happen somewhere down the road; it has been an integral part of their praxis for some time. The most important challenges we face, from climate research to space technology, from ecosystem and biodiversity research to oceanography, from demography to infection biology, are global in nature. Competition for the best young professionals and researchers is also global, as in communication between scientists – in English, the language that has come to dominate global discourse, at least in the natural sciences.
