الترجمة 3 - الفصل الأول - دورة 2008-2009
Al Baath University Second Year Faculty of Arts and Humanities First Term Department of English 11 January 2009 Translation III I- Translate the following into English: II- Translate the following passage into Arabic: Though people are much less superstitious nowadays than they used to be, they do sometimes give way to illogical fears. The desire to believe in the supernatural lurks in the background and occasionally breaks to the surface. Because superstition is infectious, popular imagination, once fired, needs little encouragement to turn fancy into fact. Some time ago, people claimed to have seen saucer-shaped objects which were supposed to have come from outer space. In time, so many of these “saucers” were seen, that one was led to believe that the earth was threatened with imminent invasion. مع الأمنيات بالنجاح للجميع

I- Translate the following into Good Arabic: I have been guilty of such cowardice. Only the other day I consumed, without demur, a plate of soggy chips in a Greenwich pub. And I very nearly chickened out of confronting British Gas. it was the sneery tone of the girl on the consumer hotline that changed my mind. British Gas had no record of my payment, she insisted, and it was highly unlikely to be the company’s fault. Maybe, she added with a sarcasm so heavy that you could hear the inverted commas, my cheque had been ‘lost in the post’. I rang my bank. The cheque had gone through three weeks before. II- Translate the following passage into English: Good Luck

I- Translate the following into Good Arabic: A Less Social Society Becoming Shy: Growing numbers of those people standing silently in line at the automatic teller machine (ATM) or pumping their own self-service gas are probably victims of that silent, anonymous epidemic. They are shy – and the rapid technological and social changes rippling through society are increasing their numbers rapidly, says the world’s pioneering researchers into shyness. It means that people are lonelier, more alienated, and in worse shape, both mentally and physically. Researchers place the blame for the rising tide of shyness on three factors. First, automation, as exemplified by ATMs and self-service pumps that take credit cards. Second, the revolution in personal computers and home electronic entertainment means couch potatoes and cyber-surfers have less reason for social interaction. third, the changing nature of family life is shutting people off from each other. I- Translate the following extract into English: II- Translate the following passage into good Arabic: Despite Czar Alexander II’s enlightened policy in Russia from 1855 to 1881, revolutionary movement and opposition of all kinds continued to grow. Criticism of the government was common among all classes. the nobility wanted to share in the governing power as a compensation for its lost social and economic privileges. The new social class, the intellectuals, rapidly forming from among children of the clergy, civil servants, and the impoverished nobility, was the most radical, demanding rapid political changes and social revolution. More moderate criticism appeared in the legalized press, the more bitter criticism in the revolutionary works was published abroad. مع الأمنيات بالنجاح للجميع

I- Translate the following into Good Arabic: Life in Space: Living aboard a space station in orbit around the Earth for months at a time poses problems for astronauts’ bodies as well as for their minds. One major problem is maintaining astronauts’ physical health. Medical treatment may be days or even weeks away, as there may not be a doctor on board. Illnesses such as appendicitis or ulcers, routinely treated on Earth, could be fatal in space because of the delay in getting to a doctor. furthermore, surgery may be impossible because blood would float around inside the operating room. Another health problem is the potential for bone deterioration. In weightless environment, the body produces less calcium. A second major problem is maintaining astronauts’ mental health. Being confined for long periods of time in dark and hostile space undoubtedly produces anxiety. Loneliness and boredom are other psychological concerns.
